Hey, this is going to start my long-belated series on mapping advice and tips.  Some cool people out there wanted advice for mapping better, and rather than give it out piecemeal, I thought it would be nice to create a center for these articles.

Now, I'm hoping you're already laughing from the title, but it has been my recent epiphany that poop is really important.  Your maps need to reflect this!  I want you to find an interior map you've made, and aren't quite pleased with.  Look at it carefully, and ask yourself why you don't believe this space exists.  I'm assuming this space under critique already has a place to sleep, and a place to eat - it may even have a place to read.  But it still doesn't feel quite right.  Try to imagine what it would be like to live inside this interior - you'd wake up in the bedroom, go to the kitchen or whatever eating setup is in place, leave for work.  But what if you need to poop?

I was stunned at how those maps that didn't feel "quite right" clicked into place when I added a bathroom.  If you're working in the Middle Ages, this can be as simple as a small room with a bucket.  Ideally, you'd have a latrine - a wooden bench with a bum-sized hole and a bucket beneath it (oh, people were so fancy!).  But when I thought about it, it made sense.  Shit happens.  People poop.  Waste removal is a need.  In fact, when you enter a space, identifying the location of a bathroom is one of the first things you do.  Adding a bathroom to a map, ironically, helps orient us to that space.

So there you go, the power of poop, now making your maps more believable!

Thank you!  I was curious if you had any advice for the best format to post the screenshots in.  I've been using JPG, but I've been hearing compliants about it scaling very poorly for mobile screens.  Would PNG-24 be better?
